On Saturday, a city court granted bail to Delhi University Associate Professor Ratan Lal, who had been arrested a day earlier over claims of a Shivling at the Gyanvapi mosque in Varanasi.
Lal was granted relief upon furnishing a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of the same amount.
The Delhi Police arrested Lal under sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups on the basis of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts detrimental to the maintenance of harmony) and 295A (deliberate act of insulting any class’s religion to outrage religious feelings).
A Delhi-based lawyer filed the complaint on Tuesday night.
Vineet Jindal alleges in his complaint that Lal recently shared a “derogatory, inciting, and provocative tweet about the Shivling”.
AISA (All India Students Association) activists protested outside Delhi University’s Arts Faculty on Saturday against the arrest of Hindu College professor Lal.
