A student group claims five were detained during a peaceful protest to demand the release of Saibaba

AISA said police detained five student activists during a ‘peaceful’ demonstration demanding the release of former Delhi University professor GN Saibaba on Saturday.

Activists were taken to the Burari police station, according to the student group. Delhi Police, however, did not respond immediately.

In a case connected to Maoism, the Bombay High Court released Saibaba and others hours after the Supreme Court suspended the decision.

A peaceful protest for GN Saibaba was disrupted by Delhi Police’s brutal detention of students from the Arts faculty, according to an activist.

On Friday, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court acquitted Saibaba and ordered his release, stating that the sanction order issued under the stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act was “bad in law and invalid” in order to prosecute the accused in the case. Five other convicts were also acquitted after their appeals were allowed by the high court.

The prosecution had appealed the acquittal to the apex court.
