Police arrested the fifth suspect and held another student for interrogation three days after an Assam student jumped off the PNGB hostel building to escape ragging on Sunday.
Four suspects were arrested earlier from the PNGB Hostel. Rahul Chetry, the prime accused, however, is still on the run, according to the police. In connection with the case, 18 students at Dibrugarh University were rusticated.
Anand Sharma was taken to a nearby hospital immediately after jumping from the two-story hostel building to escape ragging, according to the police.
According to Dr Jiten Hazarika, vice chancellor of Dibrugarh University, the university is investigating the matter and will take strict action against those responsible.
Hemanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam CM, appealed to students not to indulge in ragging after the incident.
As well as being tortured mentally and physically, Sharma’s mother said that he was forced to drink liquor as well. According to Sarita Sharma, the university administration chose to remain silent despite several complaints.
