An employee of the bank copied and pasted 1.5 crores to the wrong beneficiaries

As a result of a copy-paste error by a public sector bank employee in Hyderabad, Rs 1.50 crore of a Telangana government scheme was transferred to the wrong beneficiaries. A private hospital in the city credited Rs 10 lakh each to the salary accounts of fifteen employees.

State Bank of India (SBI) employees accidentally transferred the funds. As part of Dalit Bandhu, a scheme in Telangana intended to empower Dalits economically, this amount was intended to be credited to beneficiaries’ accounts. On April 24, an employee at SBI’s Ranga Reddy district collectorate branch committed the error.

After realizing his error, the bank employee contacted the hospital employees and requested that the money be returned to them. As a result of one of the wrong beneficiaries failing to return the entire amount, a bank official approached the police a couple of days ago.

A case was filed against Mahesh, a lab technician at the hospital, for dishonest misappropriation of property under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 403.

In an interview with police, the beneficiary said that he cleared previous debts with the money deposited because he believed it had been credited into his account by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He returned Rs 6.70 lakh to the bank, but when he failed to return the remaining amount, the bank official lodged a police complaint. It was not immediately clear what action the bank employee would face.

In the Telangana government’s ambitious Dalit Bandhu scheme, every Dalit family will receive a financial grant of Rs 10 lakh to undertake an entrepreneurial venture of their choice.

As part of the state budget for 2022-23, the government has allocated Rs 17,700 crore for the project. The state government has announced that 11,800 families would benefit at the rate of 100 families per Assembly segment during the current financial year.
