This is important reading for beer lovers. A brewery in Singapore is taking being green a notch higher by introducing ‘Newbrew.’
Although the brewery’s unique craft beer may appear or taste like usual beer, it’s made with clean, high-quality water recycled from sewage and urine.
The majority of Newbrew is made with Newater, which is not only compliant with international standards for safe drinking water, but is also clean enough to be used for brewing beer.
A honey-like aftertaste is a hallmark of this sewage-recycled beer, which is made from premium German barley malt, aromatic hops like Citra and Calypso, as well as kveik, a Norwegian strain of farm-house yeast.
On April 8, the national water agency PUB and local craft beer brewery Brewerkz launched Newbrew at Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) in conjunction with a water conference.
As the brewer carefully controls the flavours of malt, hops, and yeast strains in the production of craft beer, the Newater doesn’t contaminate those.
Singapore’s ‘greenest beer’, according to Mr Ryan Yuen, managing director of SIWW, the Newbrew promotes awareness for water recycling and reusing.
By releasing this drink to raise awareness about Singapore’s water shortage, Singapore’s water agency is tackling the inevitable water crisis.
Newbrew isn’t the only craft brewery to use recycled water when brewing beer. The craft beer company ‘Stone Brewing’ had launched the ‘Stone Full Circle Pale Ale’ in 2017. Other craft beer companies such as ‘Crust Group’ and ‘Super Loco Group’ have also released their own versions of craft beers using clean sewage recycled water.
