Canada: Rajan Sawhney, a Jalandhar native, is Alberta’s immigration minister

An honour for Jalandhar comes with the appointment of Rajan Sawhney to the position of Minister of Immigration and Multiculturalism in Alberta’s new government. Sawhney is originally from Wadala village on the outskirts of Jalandhar.

Her new role has excited the Punjabi community in India and Canada. As a candidate for Alberta’s Chief Minister, the 51-year-old failed to get the position. Her parents had a home in Tower Enclave locality near the village, even though she was born and raised in Calgary-North East,” said former Akali MLA Gurpartap Wadala. Sawhney has also received congratulatory messages from AAP Nakodar MLA Inderjit Kaur Mann and AAP Punjab secretary Rajinder Kaur Thiara.

Sawhney was elected to the Calgary-North East MLA seat in April 2019. She previously served as the Minister of Community and Social Services in the Executive Council of Alberta as a member of the United Conservative Party. She served in this ministry for almost a year after taking charge as Minister of Transportation last July.

In addition to raising money for social causes as a community volunteer, she was a mother of four. Aside from her MBA, she has degrees in economics and political science from the University of Calgary. After working in the oil and gas industry for over 20 years, she entered politics.
