The Delhi Parent Association is urging the national capital to announce summer break for school-going kids as soon as possible, due to Delhi’s record-breaking temperatures.
In a letter to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the parents association claimed the Delhi government has not taken any measures to safeguard children during the city’s hottest summer in 72 years.
On one hand, the AAP-led Delhi government has yet to amend school scheduling in light of the ongoing heatwave. However, the union government has released guidelines aimed at protecting children and people.
According to the letter, Delhi recorded a temperature of 50 degrees on May 15. However, students went to school in spite of the heat. According to the central government’s guidelines, it is not safe for people to be exposed to the sun between 12 pm and 3 pm. However, this is the time when our students leave for home,” the parent body emphasized.
Since students travelling by bus, rickshaw, and even on foot during the summer heat are prone to health hazards, and schools across the capital have low attendance and more and more kids are falling ill, it is high time the government declares summer breaks.
Summer school breaks have a sole purpose: to keep kids cool in the summer heat. So, why is Delhi government not taking any safety measures at this time when children are exposed to summer break? Read the letter, which asks the government to look into the matter and announce breaks immediately.
The request comes at a time when several areas in Delhi have recorded temperatures over 45 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported 45.6 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung observatory and 49.2 degrees Celsius at Mungeshpur in northwest Delhi and 49.1 degrees Celsius at Najafgarh in southwest Delhi, respectively.
