Vikas Raj, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), said on Tuesday that he wants to encourage sex workers and transgender people to register as voters and exercise their right to vote.
An appeal was made by Vikash Raj to 52 NGOs working on behalf of sex workers in Telangana during a video conference to enrol sex workers in the Special Summary Revision (SSR).
Transgender and female sex workers participated in the video conference with NGOs that work on HIV prevention.
According to the election commission, documentary proof should not be required in cases where sex workers lack documentary proof such as a place of residence; however, a booth level officer will verify a claimant’s residency by visiting the given address and submitting a verification report to the electoral registration officer or assistant electoral registration officer.
Transgender welfare board members and NGOs working with the transgender community then provided suggestions to the CEO during a meeting with the transgender community.
According to him, district-level special campaigns will be carried out in the same manner.
