It is considered a curse to tell someone to eat “jail ka khana” since prison food is considered unpleasant. For its quality of food provided to prisoners, the Fatehgarh Central jail in the Farrukhabad district of Uttar Pradesh has been awarded a five-star certification by the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
According to the FSSAI-approved third-party audit, the prison received a five-star “Eat Right Certificate.” It is evident that the prison is providing hygienic and high-quality meals to its detainees. Several weeks ago, after a video of a cop complaining about the food went viral, allegations surfaced about poor food quality in the police mess.
The FSSAI’s “Eat Right” accreditation was provided to 1,100 prisoners, according to District Magistrate Sanjay Kumar Singh’s media statement. According to DM Kumar, the prison received its license from the FSSAI in March 2022. In accordance with its standards, food and hygiene arrangements were improved. It is the first prison in the state to receive this certification.
During the pre-audit, Bheem Sen Mukund said that all FSSAI guidelines were followed correctly. The pre-audit report was prepared based on detailed observations and recommendations to improve sanitation, hygiene, and food safety processes.” The 1,100 inmates, he said, were also trained in sanitation, food safety, and cleanliness in addition to the jail staff.Food production has been greatly advanced to a large extent. Previously, inmates helped prepare rotis, vegetables, and pulses, but the jail administration upgraded it by installing large roti-making machines, dough-kneading machines, and vegetable-cutting machines. Although it was a manual process, it took a long time to prepare, and it required around 50 convicts to work each shift.
