The counting of the votes for the polls held to elect members of 143 panchayat samitis and 22 zilla parishads in Haryana was done on Sunday.

So far, the wins are as follows:

BJP- 58
Cong – 26

Closely behind the Congress was the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) with 14 wins. The Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had a close fight, with the former winning six seats and BSP cinching five seats.

By a big margin, the INLD’s Karan Chautala won from zila parishad in Sirsa by 600 votes.

The highest number of wins in the election, however, came from independent candidates as 95 of them managed to win without a party symbol boosting their votes.

The counting began at 8 am on Sunday with heavy security arrangements at the counting centres.

The elections for the panchayat samitis and zila parishads were held in three phases.

Haryana has 22 zila parishads comprising 411 members. The members will in turn elect the 22 zila parishad chiefs. Meanwhile, the state has 143 panchayat samitis, comprising 3,081 members who will further elect their respective presidents.

Haryana State Election Commissioner Dhanpat Singh said on Saturday that police and general observers will closely monitor the entire counting process. Videography will also be done at all the counting centres, he said.

Earlier, the results of elections for panches and sarpanches were declared immediately after the polling in each phase.
