More than 95 percent of the state’s families will receive zero electricity bills in the coming months, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said on Saturday.
According to the Chief Minister, 600 units of free electricity are provided to the people in every cycle during a function organized to distribute appointment letters to 603 newly recruited cleared and junior engineers of Punjab State Electricity Corporation.
For the first time, 86% of Punjabi households have been charged no electricity bill and more than 95% will receive free electricity in the coming months, according to the CM.
It is a great relief for domestic consumers who have been paying heavy power bills every month, Mann said, adding that the state government delivered everything it promised.
“Punjabis never even dreamed their electricity bills would be zero. Despite the state government’s strenuous efforts, it has only become possible. In addition to reducing power consumption, CM Mann said several families in the state have started using less power so they can take advantage of the free 600 units of electricity.
Another big announcement was made by the CM, who said every effort was being made to increase electricity production in the state.
In recognition of the efforts made by the state government, the coal mine near Pachwara in Jharkhand has become operational, and coal will be supplied from it in the first week of December. Punjab will be able to generate more power as a result, he said.
No previous government had bothered to reopen the mine since 2015, according to him.
Efforts are also being made by the state government to make government buildings self-sufficient in terms of power. “All government buildings will be equipped with solar energy panels, which will reduce the burden of electricity bills on the government,” said the Chief Minister.
