Karnataka Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chauhan said on Monday that the animal husbandry department is looking into eliminating stray dogs from Bengaluru.
In response to complaints of dog attacks and rabies in Bengaluru, the animal husbandry department is considering making the city stray dog-free.
In addition to catching street dogs and giving them the necessary vaccinations, we plan to bring them under one shelter, where they can be rescued and cared for properly, so that people do not have to worry about street dogs. To control the birth rate of dogs in Bengaluru, Chauhan also met with officials of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the concerned department.
According to him, we will make Bengaluru starry dog-free after considering all the information that the BBMP and the animal husbandry department have provided. In spite of the BBMP neutering at least 45,000 animals annually since 2018, the city’s stray dog population is exploding. Only 51 percent of the 3,09,000 stray dogs in the city were neutered in a 2019 survey, but officials say containing the population is more difficult than it seems. Dog-catching is a challenging task for BBMP officials involved in the program. BBMP officials told ANI that if they target 10 or 15 dogs, they capture hardly one or two, because the strays hide in culverts and drains.
