Non-basmati organic rice export ban lifted by India

In a notification issued Tuesday, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade announced that the ban on organic non-basmati rice exports has been lifted.

Earlier this month, India revised its export policy from “free” to “prohibited” and banned the export of broken rice.

A 20 percent export duty was also imposed by the Centre on all rice except parboiled rice in an effort to boost domestic supplies.

Due to the easing of domestic supplies, the ban is likely to be lifted soon.

In light of the low sown area under paddy this Kharif season, the export ban gained significance at that point. Both crop prospects and prices could be affected by this, the government opined.

This Kharif season, Indian farmers sowed less paddy. During the monsoon – June and July – Kharif crops are sown and harvested.

In some key growing regions of the country, the monsoon spread unevenly in July, contributing to the decline in sown area.
