The news agency ANI reported that 28 workers in Odisha’s Balasore district became ill after inhaling ammonia gas from a leading prawn processing plant. Among the workers who fell ill, most were women.
As a result of inhaling the gas, the workers started complaining of respiratory problems. Khantapada Community health center was immediately notified. After their condition deteriorated, nine of the workers, including five women, were transferred to Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital.
A total of 28 patients were admitted to Khantapada’s local community health center, while 15 patients were referred to Balasore. As of now, only seven workers have been shifted to Balasore district headquarters hospital, four of whom are in serious health conditions and three have been discharged,” Dr Julalsen Jagdev, Chief District Medical Officer Balasore.
