In Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Tuesday, a teacher from Samba district was killed by terrorists. The teacher was identified as Rajni Kumaar, wife of Samba district’s Raj Kumaar.
Police in Kashmir said the terrorists shot at a Hindu woman who worked as a teacher at High School Gopalpora in Kulgam. “The area has been cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” police said.
The former chief minister Omar Abdullah was shocked by the development. “This is yet another targeted killing in a string of recent attacks on unarmed civilians,” he said. In spite of the government’s assurances that they will not rest until the situation normalizes, words of condemnation and condolence ring hollow. May the deceased rest in peace.”
On May 12, Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists shot dead Rahul Bhat (35), a clerk under the special employment package for migrants in 2012-11, in Chadoora, a central Kashmir district in Budgam.
Jammu and Kashmir has seen several protests over the killing of Bhat and the administration’s “failure” to provide security to Kashmiri Pandits.
Kashmiri Pandits were seriously injured in April after suspected militants fired at them in Shopian, South Kashmir. In addition to Bal Krishan, two other attacks occurred during the day in Chotigam village, killing one CRPF officer and injuring three others, including two migrant workers.
After prominent businessman M L Bindroo was killed in Srinagar in October last year, the government increased security for Pandits living there, reducing such targeted killings.
A carpenter, Mohammad Akram, was killed in Uttar Pradesh in March. A labourer from Bihar, Biswajeet Kumar, was shot two days later. They also shot and injured a driver and a conductor from Pathankot in Punjab, both near Litter village in Nowpora district.
