Sangrur panchayat complex axes trees despite High Court stay order

Full-grown trees were axed from the local panchayat bhavan despite stay orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC).

The locals informed other residents after they saw trees being axed at the panchayat bhavan.

It is a contempt of the court’s order to axe the trees at the panchayat bhavan today. All officials are aware of the court’s stay order. Jasinder Sekhon, a local environment activist, said he would bring the matter up during the hearing on December 13.

The women police station occupies three rooms in the bhavan. However, the police did not intervene to stop the axing.

According to Sukhwinder Kaur, SHO of the women’s police station, the office was at the back of the building, with the zila parishad on the front.

I’ve learned that trees have been removed from the building’s front side. In the back of the building, we have our office and parking spaces.

Since four years ago, axing of trees has been a huge problem here. Locals claim the city used to be known as the “City of Gardens”, but hundreds of full grown trees were axed during the tenure of the previous Congress government.

Varjeet Walia, the Sangrur ADC Development Officer, said, “Trees were illegally cut down from the panchayat bhavan. The officer will be identified and strict action will be taken.”
