Shiromani Akali Dal members revolt against SGPC

Bibi Jagir Kaur has announced her support for the SGPC elections in a huge setback for the SAD president.

Sukhbir Singh Badal, the president of the SAD, allegedly failed to deliver justice in cases relating to sacrilege of the Guru Granth Sahib, and has appealed to all SGPC members to free it.

As this is the first chance for us to free the SGPC from Sukhbir Singh Badal, the first time the House has had a chance to do so, I will vote for Bibi Jagir Kaur and ask the House to support her. SGPC member Baldev Singh Chungha, from Barnala district’s Bhadaur area, says Badal wants to run the panel and the party according to his wishes without caring about the members and workers.

A change in the leadership of the SAD prompted Chungha’s expulsion from the party in March 2022.

It is neither my intention to criticize the SAD nor Harjinder Singh Dhami, the current president of the SGPC, who is a good man. He is a personal friend of mine. Chungha said that since Dhami cannot take independent decisions, it is necessary to change the president of the SGPC.

Balbir Singh Ghunas, former SAD MLA and current SGPC member, said he was sidelined without reason despite his hard work.

SGPC’s working must be transparent, and Bibi Jagir Kaur is the first to take a stand for this. “I will vote for her and hope that she will apologize to Guru Granth Sahib after becoming president of the SGPC,” he said.

Satnam Singh Rahi, a senior SAD leader from Barnala, said Chungha was expelled from the party while Ghunas dominated the government.

As SAD president, I have always taken care of all workers and have punished those who engage in sacrilege against Guru Granth Sahib effectively. “All allegations are unfounded,” he said.
