A ceremony was held on Monday to honor Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan for not burning wheat and paddy stubble for several years.
Faridkot farmers were honored along with 13 farmers from Moga, 10 farmers from Sangrur, one farmer from Rupnagar, 10 farmers from Gurdaspur, 7 farmers from Ludhiana, and 7 farmers from Barnala.
Sandhwan said he is feeling privileged by honoring farmers who are following the path of the Gurus, because they are making a significant contribution to society.
This is the first time in the Assembly that people will be able to sit together and discuss ideas for protecting the environment. Also, Sandhwan appealed to the Punjab government to provide maximum assistance to farmers to do environmentally-friendly farming.
During his address to the farmers, Environment Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayar expressed the hope that this program would serve as a guide for them. According to him, the Punjab government is trying very hard to resolve the paddy straw problem, and efforts are being made at all levels, but without farmer cooperation it will not be possible. Planting more trees would help protect the environment, according to him.
