The Attorney General’s appointment is set to be made by senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi

As the fourteenth Attorney General (A-G) of India, Mukul Rohatgi is expected to be nominated.

September 30 marks the end of the term of incumbent A-G K K Venugopal.

Rohatgi will serve as A-G for the second time, after holding the position from June 2014 to June 2017. The most recent case in which Rohatgi represented Ashish Mishra was the Allahabad High Court order depriving him of bail in the Lakhimpur Kheri case. As well as representing Shah Rukh Khan’s son in the Cordelia cruise drugs case, he also represented Aryan Khan.

The oldest person to hold the position, Venugopal succeeded senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi in July 2017. The post was subsequently reappointed to him.

There is usually a three-year tenure for the attorney general. On account of his advanced age, Venugopal requested the government to relieve him of his responsibilities when his first term as AG was to end in 2020.

Venugopal, however, accepted a fresh one-year tenure after the government expressed interest in retaining him due to his high-profile cases and extensive experience.
