An Oakland school shooting wounded at least six people on Wednesday, officials said.
According to Alameda County Sheriff spokesperson Lt. Sutton, the scene of the shooting is no longer active.
Michael Hunt, a spokesperson for Oakland Fire Department, said paramedics transported six patients to hospitals with gunshot wounds.
The shooting at Sojourner Truth Independent Study, a school for alternative education for children, was reported by Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf on Twitter.
Students older than 18 might be among the victims, according to officials.
Highland Hospital in Oakland treated three wounded and their conditions were not known, officials said. Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley treated the remaining three.
The Oakland Unified School District spokesperson, John Sasaki, said in a statement that district officials do not have additional information beyond what Oakland Police are reporting. He said the headquarters of the Sojourner Truth Independent Study has no students and is located on the same block as three other schools.
In television footage, dozens of police cars and yellow tape were seen outside the school and nearby campuses were evacuated.
Investigators told Treva Reid that the shooting may have been related to rising “gang and group violence.”
Captain Casey Johnson confirmed during a brief news conference that six people had been shot, but he did not respond to any questions.
