India registered nearly 1,000 more cases than on Wednesday (2,745) in its daily Covid tally on Thursday.
New cases have been reported from Mumbai, Chandigarh, and Tamil Nadu among other parts of India.

The number of deaths has now reached 524,641 with five deaths recorded in the last 24 hours.
In the active caseload, there were 1,123 new cases, pushing the total to 19,509, the health ministry announced. This represents 0.04 per cent of the total infections. The recovery rate was recorded at 98.74 per cent.
A daily positivity rate of 0.60 percent was recorded, as well as a weekly positivity rate of 0.56 percent.
Mumbai, in Maharashtra, reported 739 cases on Wednesday, the most cases in 116 days. The positivity rate is 8.4%, the highest since February.
Rajesh Tope, the health minister of Maharashtra, admitted at an event that cases of Coronavirus are increasing in Mumbai, Pune and Thane. “There are 3,475 cases (in Mumbai, Pune and Thane) alone,” he said.
The Chandigarh tricity also reported a spike with data showing a jump of 168% between April and May in infection. In April and May, there were no Covid-related deaths reported. A fatality was reported in March from Mohali, the only death in that month.
Chandigarh is the hardest hit of the three jurisdictions, with 379 cases, followed by Mohali with 241 and Panchkula with 163.
In Tamil Nadu, health minister Ma Subramanian says that the situation is not yet alarming, while attributing the sudden increase in clusters and spike in infections to students arriving from other states.
