US-China relations could be broken by Pelosi’s Taiwan visit

The world needs answers on Washington’s China policy, regardless of whether the US House Speaker visits Taiwan

There have been reports this week that US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will visit southeast China’s Taiwan region in August.

Washington-Beijing relations will plunge to a new low if this happens, as this will be the highest level of contact between US officials and separatist forces in Taiwan.

A similar announcement has been made in the past. After testing positive for COVID-19, Pelosi cancelled her trip to Taiwan in April this year. In anticipation of Pelosi’s trip taking place at another time, this latest development in the US-China saga has been anticipated.

In the US government, Pelosi is the third-highest official. As second in line to the White House after Vice President Kamala Harris in the event of something happening to President Joe Biden. A visit by the Speaker of the House of Representatives to Taiwan is an extraordinarily high-level endorsement of Taiwan’s so-called government by the US.
